Smaller, more specialised distributions have also been publishing new versions at a rapid pace.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \tSpring is traditionally a busy time for the Linux world&#8217;s heavy hitters, with both Fedora and Ubuntu releasing major upgrades to their popular distributions. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/open\/features\/What-s-new-in-Ubuntu-12-04-LTS-1545162.html\" title=\"What's new in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS \u2013 26 April 2012\">Ubuntu 12.04 LTS<\/a>, code-named &#8222;Precise Pangolin&#8221;, was released in late April, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Fedora-17-Beefy-Miracle-released-1585486.html\" rel=\"external\">Fedora 17<\/a> made its appearance at the end of last month. The Linux Mint and Mageia projects have published new stable releases, while progress on the next version of openSUSE has been delayed due to problems within the project.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \tUbuntu and co.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \t<span class=\"pic_right\" style=\"width:81px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ubuntu logo\" height=\"80\" src=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/open\/imgs\/45\/8\/8\/2\/5\/5\/5\/Ubuntu_New_logo80-789b7b5529ff5300.png\" width=\"81\" \/>\u00a0<\/span> Precise Pangolin is Canonical&#8217;s latest long term support (LTS) release of its Ubuntu Linux distribution. It further polishes the sometimes controversial Unity desktop and adds a new head-up display feature. With the <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.ubuntu.com\/Unity\/HUD\" rel=\"external\">HUD<\/a>, users can search their systems and quickly launch applications. Development on the project&#8217;s next major release, 12.10 &#8222;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Ubuntu-12-10-named-as-Quantal-Quetzal-1546055.html\" title=\"Ubuntu 12.10 named as \">Quantal Quetzal<\/a>&#8222;, kicked off earlier this month with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/First-Ubuntu-12-10-Quantal-Quetzal-alpha-arrives-1613679.html\">first alpha<\/a> for testing. Scheduled for final release in October, Ubuntu 12.10 has already seen a number of applications, such as the installer, ported to Python\u00a03 as the final release will only include the 3.x branch of Python. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Ubuntu-12-10-alpha-2-comes-with-Linux-3-5-based-kernel-1628863.html\">recent second alpha<\/a> of Quantal Quetzal included a release candidate for the 3.5 Linux kernel; it will be followed by another alpha at the end of July and two betas in September.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \t<span class=\"pic_left\" style=\"width:88px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Linux Mint logo\" height=\"80\" src=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/open\/imgs\/45\/8\/8\/2\/5\/5\/5\/Linux_Mint_Logo_80-2e522a0629abad82.png\" width=\"88\" \/> <\/span> About a month after 12.04 LTS arrived, the <a href=\"http:\/\/linuxmint.com\/\" rel=\"external\">Linux Mint<\/a> project issued <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Linux-Mint-13-Maya-arrives-as-two-editions-1583381.html\">version 13<\/a> of its increasingly popular Ubuntu-based Linux distribution, providing fans with new desktop options other than Unity. Available as two separate editions, Mint 13 &#8222;Maya&#8221; lets users choose between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Cinnamon-1-4-improves-workspace-management-1472678.html\" title=\"Cinnamon 1.4 improves workspace management \u2013 15 March 2012\">version 1.4 of Cinnamon<\/a>, the project&#8217;s own fork of the GNOME Shell interface used in GNOME\u00a03, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/GNOME-2-fork-MATE-reaches-version-1-2-1540655.html\" title=\"GNOME 2 fork MATE reaches version 1.2 \u2013 17 April 2012\">the 1.2 release<\/a> of the MATE GNOME 2.x fork. <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.linuxmint.com\/?p=2046\" rel=\"external\">Versions for computer vendors and manufacturers<\/a> that enable Linux Mint to be &#8222;pre-installed&#8221; on a machine arrived at the beginning of June. For those who prefer Debian over Ubuntu, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Linux-Mint-Debian-Edition-201204-arrives-with-MATE-1-2-and-Cinnamon-1-4-1558535.html\">Linux Mint Debian Edition 201204<\/a> is also available with these desktops.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \t<span class=\"pic_right\" style=\"width:64px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Debian logo\" height=\"80\" src=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/open\/imgs\/45\/8\/8\/2\/5\/5\/5\/debian-logo_clean80-d0883dd5aac2f35d.png\" width=\"64\" \/> <\/span> Speaking of Debian, in a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Debian-7-0-Wheezy-about-to-be-frozen-1623777.html\">announcement<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.debian.org\/\" rel=\"external\">Debian<\/a> project&#8217;s release team confirmed that version 7.0 known as &#8222;<a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.debian.org\/DebianWheezy\" rel=\"external\">Wheezy<\/a>&#8221; will be feature frozen at the end of the month, as it moves from the distribution&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.debian.org\/releases\/testing\/\" rel=\"external\">testing<\/a> branch. After this freeze, no new major changes will be integrated, instead the developers will focus on finding and fixing bugs to improve its overall stability. If all goes according to plan, Debian\u00a07 should arrive early next year with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Debian-7-0-Wheezy-is-starting-to-take-shape-1575902.html\">support for the ARM architecture<\/a> and Ext4 as its default filesystem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \tSnowlinux is another up-and-coming distro that gives users a choice of Ubuntu- or Debian-based editions. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Snowlinux-2-delivers-a-GNOME-2-based-Ubuntu-1586876.html\">Snowlinux 2 &#8222;Cream&#8221;<\/a> is built on Ubuntu 12.04 and is available with either the MATE <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snowlinux.de\/blog\/413-snowlinux-2-qcreamq-cinnamon-released\" rel=\"external\">or Cinnamon<\/a> desktops, while the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snowlinux.de\/blog\/341-snowlinux-2-qiceq-released\" rel=\"external\">&#8222;Ice&#8221; version<\/a> features Debian\u00a06 &#8222;Squeeze&#8221; Stable at its core and the older 2.3x branch of GNOME because of, its developers say, &#8222;drastic changes with GNOME 3 and Unity&#8221;; a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snowlinux.de\/blog\/432-snowlinux-2-qiceq-kde-released\" rel=\"external\">version with KDE<\/a> was published just over a week ago.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \tFedora, Mageia and more<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \t<span class=\"pic_right\" style=\"width:80px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Fedora logo\" height=\"80\" src=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/open\/imgs\/45\/8\/8\/2\/5\/5\/5\/Fedoralogo80-fd5eb0951cf210be.png\" width=\"80\" \/> <\/span> Controversially named &#8222;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Fedora-17-will-be-a-Beefy-Miracle-1358633.html\" title=\"Fedora 17 will be a Beefy Miracle \u2013 11 October 2011\">Beefy Miracle<\/a>&#8222;, Fedora\u00a017 also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/open\/features\/What-s-new-in-Fedora-17-1585254.html\">featured<\/a> updates to its desktop; in this case, an upgraded version (<a href=\"http:\/\/fedoraproject.org\/wiki\/Features\/Gnome3.4\" rel=\"external\">3.4.1<\/a>) of the GNOME Shell that now works on systems with graphics drivers that don&#8217;t support 3D hardware acceleration. The Red-Hat-sponsored distribution also implemented major changes to the filesystem structure that saw the removal of the <code>\/bin\/<\/code>, <code>\/sbin\/<\/code>, <code>\/lib\/<\/code> and <code>\/lib64\/<\/code> directories \u2013 these have been moved to similarly named sub-directories of <code>\/usr\/<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \tVersion 18 of Fedora will be code-named &#8222;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Fedora-18-will-be-Spherical-Cow-1564860.html\">Spherical Cow<\/a>&#8221; and will include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Fedora-18-to-support-UEFI-Secure-Boot-1588057.html\">support for UEFI Secure Boot<\/a>, which will be enabled by default on some future Windows\u00a08 hardware. It will also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Fedora-18-will-install-certain-updates-when-rebooting-1621811.html\">change the way that updates are installed<\/a>: some updates will only be installed when the system is rebooted, in order to avoid problems that can occur with some applications and services if they&#8217;re updated while still in use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \tClones of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) also saw releases of new versions in recent months. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/CentOS-and-Oracle-release-RHEL-5-8-clones-1466138.html\" title=\"CentOS and Oracle release RHEL 5.8 clones \u2013 8 March 2012\">CentOS and Oracle published<\/a> their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/open\/features\/What-s-new-in-Red-Hat-Enterprise-Linux-5-8-1439890.html\" title=\"What's new in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.8  \u2013 21 February 2012\">RHEL 5.8<\/a> clones in March, while the Scientific Linux project <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Scientific-Linux-5-8-released-1558343.html\" title=\"Scientific Linux 5.8 released \u2013 25 April 2012\">took until the end of April<\/a> to publish its version. Red Hat itself released the latest version of its enterprise distribution, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/open\/features\/What-s-new-in-Red-Hat-Enterprise-Linux-6-3-1623186.html\">RHEL 6.3<\/a>, mid-June, with enhancements for virtualisation, storage and a number of new drivers. With that release, the race was on for the first RHEL cloner to ship their own version. That race was quickly won when in the last week of June, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Oracle-Linux-6-3-released-1629340.html\">Oracle Linux 6.3<\/a>, based on RHEL 6.3, <a href=\"https:\/\/oss.oracle.com\/pipermail\/el-errata\/2012-June\/002881.html\" rel=\"external\">was released<\/a> with its &#8222;Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel&#8221; and various driver updates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \t<span class=\"pic_left\" style=\"width:80px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mageia logo\" height=\"80\" src=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/open\/imgs\/45\/8\/8\/2\/5\/5\/5\/mageia_80-ad5590fef0ef775e.png\" width=\"80\" \/> <\/span> Between the Ubuntu and Fedora updates, the Mageia development team <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Mageia-2-arrives-with-GNOME-3-and-systemd-1582479.html\">published the second major release<\/a> of the community fork of Mandriva Linux. Mageia\u00a02 is a big step for the developers, who say that their distribution is &#8222;growing up&#8221;: it is the first version to make significant changes to the code on which it is based. These include switching to the systemd init system and upgrading GNOME to version 3.4; other desktops, including KDE, Xfce and LXDE, as well as various window managers, have been upgraded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \tFollowing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Mandriva-s-financial-decision-delayed-again-1420494.html\" title=\"Mandriva's financial decision delayed again \u2013 24 January 2012\">financial troubles<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Bid-for-Mandriva-fails-1425227.html\" title=\"Bid for Mandriva fails \u2013 31 January 2012\">failed bids<\/a>, the company behind Mandriva <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Mandriva-to-be-given-over-to-the-community-1578780.html\">announced that<\/a> control over the Linux distribution would be handed over to the community, which began <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Mandriva-community-starts-work-on-2012-release-1575735.html\">working on a new release in May<\/a> and recently published a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Mandriva-technology-preview-released-1619943.html\">technology preview of Mandriva Linux 2012<\/a>. The Mandriva management has now confirmed that it wants to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Mandriva-management-wants-to-collaborate-with-Mageia-Update-1580440.html\">work with Mageia<\/a> to collaborate on future versions of the operating system, and has started outlining plans for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Mandriva-begins-foundation-creation-1621753.html\">creation of a foundation<\/a> for Mandriva Linux. An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rosalab.com\/blogs\/rosa-lxde-2012-lts\" rel=\"external\">LXDE edition<\/a> of the ROSA customised version of Mandriva Linux from Russian company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rosalab.com\/\" rel=\"external\">ROSA Laboratory<\/a> was also published recently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \t<span class=\"pic_right\" style=\"width:80px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"openSUSE logo\" height=\"48\" src=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/open\/imgs\/45\/8\/8\/2\/5\/5\/5\/openSUSElogo80-ccbff3cc43f3648f.png\" width=\"80\" \/> <\/span> However, not all community distributions are progressing smoothly: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensuse.org\/en\/\" rel=\"external\">openSUSE<\/a> project has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Wake-up-call-for-openSUSE-as-12-2-is-delayed-1617500.html\">encountered some growing pains and other issues<\/a> that have caused it to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/openSUSE-12-2-release-slips-to-September-1618768.html\">delay its upcoming 12.2 release<\/a> from mid-July to September. Version 12.2 of openSUSE, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Second-beta-for-openSUSE-12-2-released-1623023.html\">currently available as a second beta<\/a> for testing, upgrades the distribution&#8217;s Linux kernel to 3.4.2 and KDE\u00a0SC to 4.8.4. Its currently unknown whether it will change its release cycle or switch to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.opensuse.org\/Portal%3ATumbleweed\" rel=\"external\">Tumbleweed<\/a> rolling release model.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \tThe Linux Toolbelts<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \tNot all Linux distributions have to be an everyday operating system; bootable Linux-based systems like Parted Magic, Clonezilla Live and SystemRescueCD don&#8217;t require installation and can be used for hard disk partitioning and duplication, as well as fixing other operating systems and even removing viruses on Windows systems. Unlike traditional desktop distributions, these tend to be updated more frequently to upgrade the included applications and add new features.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \t<span class=\"pic_right\" style=\"width:80px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Parted Magic logo\" height=\"81\" src=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/open\/imgs\/45\/8\/8\/2\/5\/5\/5\/Parted_Magic_logo80-c92b0e00e6798500.png\" width=\"80\" \/> <\/span> The versatile <a href=\"http:\/\/partedmagic.com\" rel=\"external\">Parted Magic<\/a> partitioning tool has already been updated twice in the past month, with the most recent version <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Parted-Magic-update-adds-proprietary-NVIDIA-driver-option-1627106.html\">adding an option to install a proprietary NVIDIA driver<\/a> for systems that have trouble with the open source nouveau graphics driver. Earlier this month, its developer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/news\/item\/Independent-software-developers-go-full-time-with-open-source-1614327.html\">announced<\/a> that he is now working on the project as his full-time job and is living on donations from users.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \t<span class=\"pic_left\" style=\"width:44px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Clonezilla logo\" height=\"80\" src=\"http:\/\/www.h-online.com\/open\/imgs\/45\/8\/8\/2\/5\/5\/5\/clonezilla_logo_notxt80-409846366d1534da.png\" width=\"44\" \/> <\/span> Another popular tool is the Debian-based <a href=\"http:\/\/clonezilla.org\/clonezilla-live.php\" rel=\"external\">Clonezilla Live<\/a> open source clone system, which includes a range of features that the developers say is similar to that of the Symantec Ghost Corporate Edition, with applications such as the Partclone image utility. Its most <a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/mailarchive\/message.php?msg_id=29464671\" rel=\"external\">recent 1.2.12 update<\/a> upgraded the underlying Debian &#8222;Sid&#8221; OS and the GDISK interactive partition table manipulator, while also adding support for booting from CD on UEFI machines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> \t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sysresccd.org\" rel=\"external\">SystemRescueCd<\/a> is a useful tool for those needing to administer and repair both Windows and Linux systems. With it, users can find and recover data after a crash, scan for and remove viruses, and also create and edit hard drive partitions.
